| (1) | A large turbine-engine aeroplane shall only be operated if it is equipped with— |
| (a) | an altitude alerting system capable of— |
| (i) | alerting flight deck crew members upon approaching preselected altitude in either ascent or descent in sufficient time to establish level flight at such preselected altitude; and |
| (ii) | alerting flight deck crew members when deviating above or below a preselected altitude by at least an aural signal. |
| (b) | a pressure-altitude reporting transponder which operates in accordance with the requirements provided in Par1 and is capable of— |
| (i) | providing pressure-altitude information with a resolution of 25ft, or better from its aeroplane data source; and |
| (ii) | automatically providing information on its airborne or on-ground status of using a Mode S transponder. |
Note 1: This regulation will improve the effectiveness of airborne collision avoidance systems as well as air traffic services that employ Mode S radar. In particular, tracking processes are significantly enhanced with a resolution of 7.62m (25 ft), or better.
Note 2: Mode C replies of transponders always report pressure altitude in 30.50m (100 ft) increments irrespective of the resolution of the data source.
