Part 106

Subpart 1 : Hang-glider and Paraglider Certificate

106.01.15 Requirements for pilot certificate

 

(1) An applicant for the issuance of a pilot certificate shall—
(a) be 16 years or older;
(b) hold a valid medical certificate issued in terms of Part 67;
(c) have successfully completed training towards a pilot certificate as prescribed in Document SA-CATS 106;
(d) have passed theoretical knowledge examination as prescribed in Document SA-CATS 106; and
(e) have passed a competency check with a Grade A or Grade B flight instructor.

 

(2) An application for the issuance of a pilot certificate shall be made to the Director on the appropriate form and shall be accompanied by—
(a) a copy of an applicant’s ID or passport;
(b) a valid medical certificate issued in terms of Part 67;
(c) proof that an applicant has complied with the training requirements of this Part;
(d) proof that an applicant has passed the prescribed theoretical knowledge examination;
(e) a copy of a logbook showing all training, accurately summarised as prescribed in Document SA-CATS 106;
(f) a recent passport size photograph of an applicant; and
(g) proof of payment of an appropriate fee as prescribed in Part 187.

 

(3) The Director may issue a pilot certificate if an applicant complies with all requirements of this Part.

 

(4) A pilot certificate issued in terms of subregulation (3) shall be valid for an indefinite period provided that a holder—
(a) retains a valid medical certificate issued in terms of Part 67;
(b) complies with the maintenance of competency requirements of this Part; and
(c) pays the applicable currency fee as prescribed in Part 187.

 

(5) A holder of a pilot certificate issued in terms of this Part may act as a PIC of an aircraft in a category for which such holder is rated in VMC by day, provided that such holder complies with the applicable endorsement requirements of this Part.

 

(6) An applicant for a pilot certificate shall be issued with a category rating for which a certificate is sought.

 

(7) Where a holder of one category rating applies for an addition to another category rating, such holder shall—
(a) undergo training as prescribed in Documents SA-CATS 106, and
(b) submit documentation as required in terms of this Subpart, to the Director within 60 days.
