7. Hours of Work

7.3 Meal and other rest intervals

Purchase

(1)	No employer shall require or permit an employee—

(a)	to work for a continuous period of more than five hours without an uninterrupted interval of—

(i)	in the Magisterial District of Port Elizabeth, an interval of 45 minutes;

(ii)	in all other areas, an interval of one hour;

Provided that for the purpose of this paragraph, periods of work interrupted by shorter intervals than those specified in subparagraphs (i) and (ii) shall be deemed to be continuous.

(2)

A rest interval of not less than 15 minutes during which no work shall be performed, shall be allowed to each employee as nearly as practicable to the middle of each morning work period, and a rest interval of 10 minutes shall be allowed to each employee as nearly as practicable to the middle of each afternoon work period. Such intervals shall be reckoned as time worked. Utensils and boiling water for making tea shall be provided by the employer and be available for the employees at the commencement of each rest and lunch interval.
