To obtain a certificate of competency as chief engineer officer—
| (a) |
a candidate holding a certificate of competency as an Officer in charge of an Engineering Watch shall— |
| (i) |
have at least 36 months sea service as an officer in charge of engineering watch on trading ships of at least 3 000 kW propulsion power; and |
| (ii) |
have completed approved education and training and meet the standards of competence specified in the Training Standards Code for this certificate; |
| (b) |
a candidate holding a certificate of competency as second engineer shall— |
| (i) |
have at least 12 months sea service whilst serving as second engineer on trading ships of at least 3 000 kW propulsion power; and |
| (ii) |
have completed approved education and training and meet the standards of competence specified in the Training Standards Code for this certificate; |
| (c) |
a candidate holding a certificate of competency as chief engineer (<3 000 kW) shall— |
| (i) |
have at least 12 months sea service whilst serving as second engineer on trading ships of at least 3 000 kW propulsion power; and |
| (ii) |
have completed approved education and training and meet the standards of competence specified in the Training Standards Code for this certificate. |
