ANNEXURE 1

 

Specifications for Provincial number plates

 

A. NUMBER PLATES
1. General specifications

 

Number plates must be embossed plates, which must comply with SANS 1116, that is, "Retro-reflective Registration Plates for Motor Vehicles" - Part 2: "Registration plates (metal)" or Part 4: "Registration plates (plastic)".

 

2. Vehicle number plates excluding vehicle number plates of iSilo

 

The provincial Coat of Arms and Provincial ID must be printed under the topcoat of the retro-reflective surface, in compliance with SANS 1116,on all vehicles number plates, excluding the vehicles number plates of iSilo, and must include the—

(a) provincial Coat of Arms, which must be positioned between the allocated licence number, and the letters 'ZN', and have the following dimensions—
(i) 50 millimetres by 48,6 millimetres for plate size 520 millimetres by 113 millimetres;
(ii) 50  millimetres  by  48,6  millimetres for  plate  size  440  millimetres  by  120 millimetres;
(iii) 50 millimetres by 48,6 millimetres for plate size 250 millimetres by 205 millimetres;
(iv) 40  millimetres  by 38,95  millimetres for  plate  size  250  millimetres  by  165 millimetres; and
(v) 20 millimetres wide by 19 millimetres for motor trade number plates;

 

(b) Provincial ID, which must be displayed in a central position at the top of the number plate, and the wording must be six millimetres, and in the Arial black font, and must be—
(i) blue in colour for—
(aa) general vehicles numbers;
(bb) personalised licence numbers; and
(cc) motor trade numbers;
(ii) black in colour for—
(aa) public transport licence numbers; and
(bb) personalised licence numbers for public transport vehicles; and (iii) red in colour for government vehicle licence numbers;

(iii)        red in colour for government vehicle licence numbers;

 

(c) allocated licence number and licence mark, which must be centred on the number plate; and

 

(d) South African Bureau of Standards certification mark, which must be on the bottom right of the number plate, and the dimensions must be in terms of SANS 1116, as contemplated in item 1 of this Annexure.

4. Vehicle number plates for iSilo

 

(1) The number plates for iSilo must be printed on a retro-reflective surface in compliance with SANS 1116, and must include the—
(a) royal Coat of Arms, which must be positioned between the letters 'ZK', which stands for 'Zulu King', the allocated licence number, and have the following dimensions -
(i) 65 millimetres by 66 millimetres for plate size 520 millimetres by 113 millimetres;
(ii) 50 millimetres by 50,8 millimetres for  plate size 250 millimetres by 205 millimetres;
(iii) 40 millimetres by 40,6 millimetres for plate size 250 millimetres by 165 millimetres;
(b) Provincial ID, which must be displayed in a central position at the top of the number plate, and the wording must be six millimetres, in the Arial font, and must be blue in colour;
(c) allocated licence mark and licence number, which must be centred on the number plate; and
(d) South African Bureau of Standards certification mark, which must be on the bottom right of the number plate, and the dimensions must be in terms of SANS 1116, as contemplated in item 1 of this Annexure.

C. PLATE FEATURES

 

7. Positive identification of number plates for Province

 

(1) Number plates must incorporate a set of positive identification images that form an integral part of the plate, and which must—
(a) appear,
(b) disappear; or
(c) change colour,

at certain angles.
