The purpose of this National Standard of Policing is to determine a uniform ranking structure and insignia for all municipal police services. This will enhance effective co-ordination and co-operation between members of the South African Police Service and municipal police services. The purpose of this National Standard of Policing is furthermore to advance the professionalising of police services by ensuring a standardised command structure within all municipal police services.
