Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act, 2000

To give effect to section 9 read with item 23(1) of Schedule 6 to the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996, so as to prevent and prohibit unfair discrimination and harassment; to promote equality and eliminate unfair discrimination; to prevent and prohibit hate speech; and to provide for matters connected therewith.

The Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act, 2000 (Act No. 4 of 2000) has been amended by section 25 of the Legal Aid South Africa Act, 2013 (Act No. 39 of 2014), Government Gazette 38315, Notice No. 1013, dated 9 December 2014.

 

The Act has been amended by the Judicial Matters Amendment Act, 2008 (Act No. 66 of 2008) as published in Government Gazette No. 31908 dated 17 February 2009.

 

The Act has been amended by the Judicial Matters Second Amendment Act No. 55 of 2004 (GG No. 26206 dated 31 March 2004) and the Judicial Matters Amendment Act No. 22 of 2005 (GG No. 28391 dated 11 January 2006)

The Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Amendment Act, 2002 (52 of 2002) has been applied to the Act.

Notice R.874, Establishment of Equality Review Committee and Appointment of Members thereof, as published in Gazette 21517 and dated 1 September 2000, has been added to the Act.

The Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act, 2000, has been added to the site on 29 February 2000, as published in Government Gazette 20876 dated 3 February 2000.Sections 1, 2, 3, 4(2), 5, 6, 29 (with the exception of subsection (2)), 32, 33 and 34(1) came into operation on 1 September 2000.
