Regulations relating to the Constitution of the Medical and Dental Professions Board, 2025

2. Constitution of the board

 

The professional board shall consist of the following 36 members appointed by the Minister and who must permanently reside in South Africa:—

 

(a) 10 medical practitioners, of whom at least three must be from designated groups who must be appointed on the basis of nominations by persons permanently residing in the Republic of South Africa and whose names appear in the register of medical practitioners;

 

(b) six specialists in medicine, of whom at least three must be from designated groups who must be appointed on the basis of nominations by persons permanently residing in the Republic of South Africa and whose names appear in the register of medical practitioners;

 

(c) three dentists, of whom at least two shall be from designated groups, who must be appointed on the basis of nominations by persons permanently residing in the Republic of South Africa and whose names appear in the register of dentists;

 

(d) three specialists in dentistry, of whom at least one must be from designated groups who must be appointed on the basis of nominations by persons permanently residing in the Republic of South Africa and whose names appear in the register of dental practitioners;

 

(e) one person whose name appears on the register of medical scientists appointed on the basis of nominations by person permanently residing in the Republic of South Africa and whose names appear in the register of medical scientists;

 

(f) two medical practitioners who must be appointed on the recommendation by Universities South Africa to represent universities with faculties or schools of medicine;

 

(g) one dentist who must be appointed on the recommendation by Universities South Africa to represent universities with faculties or schools of dentistry;

 

(h) one person representing the Colleges of medicine, who shall be recommended by the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA);

 

(i) one person representing the Department of Health;

 

(j) one clinical associate from designated groups who must be appointed on the basis of nominations by persons permanently residing in the Republic of South Africa and whose names appear in the register of clinical associates; and

 

(k) seven community representatives, one of whom shall be a person with financial knowledge or skills, and one of whom shall be a person versed in law.
