Draft National Energy Efficiency Strategy Gazetted for Public Comment
Brought to you by SA Legal Academy: Under the authority of the Department of Electricity & Energy, a draft National Energy Efficiency Strategy has been gazetted for public consultation.
The draft policy document aims to secure Cabinet endorsement for treating energy efficiency as a primary strategic resource rather than a secondary policy mechanism. According to the department, the strategy marks a shift away from fragmented, voluntary measures toward a disciplined, coordinated national programme of action.
The strategy frames energy efficiency as one of the fastest and most cost-effective mechanisms for improving supply security and mitigating grid constraints across economic sectors. Written submissions and public representations on the draft strategy must be lodged by 29 December 2026.
What this means for you, your business, or your clients
- For yourself: No direct personal statutory liabilities; stay apprised of forthcoming technical standards impacting energy auditor certifications and energy management roles.
- For your business: Assess commercial property and operational energy profiles now to prepare for eventual mandatory reporting thresholds and stricter national efficiency targets.
- For your clients: Advise industrial and commercial clients to audit current energy efficiency investments, quantify potential regulatory compliance impacts, and submit representations prior to the 29 December 2026 deadline.
