Brought to you by SAnews: The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has issued a reminder to registered employers to complete their 2026 Employer Interim Reconciliation Declaration (EMP501) submissions ahead of the statutory deadline on 31 October 2026.

In terms of paragraph 14(2) of the Fourth Schedule to the Income Tax Act, No. 58 of 1962, read with the provisions of the Tax Administration Act, No. 28 of 2011, employers are required to reconcile payroll taxes and third-party levies for the six-month period spanning 1 March 2026 to 31 August 2026. The submission covers:

  • Employees’ tax deducted or withheld, including Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE);
  • Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) contributions under the Unemployment Insurance Contributions Act, No. 4 of 2002;
  • Skills Development Levy (SDL) contributions under the Skills Development Levies Act, No. 97 of 1998; and
  • Tax certificates (IRP5/IT3(a)) generated for all employees, ensuring demographic and remuneration source codes are complete and accurate.

Submission Verification and System Enhancements

SARS confirmed that submission alone does not establish legal compliance. Employers and payroll administrators must review submission statuses and PAYE Dashboards on eFiling or e@syFile™ Employer to ensure the declaration has been successfully processed without rejection or outstanding balancing errors.

For the 2026 interim filing cycle, SARS has introduced technical and system enhancements across e@syFile™ Employer, including updated validation rules, revised source codes, and operational changes affecting EMP201 and EMP501 declarations. Failure to submit declarations timeously or filing inaccurate reconciliations exposes employers to administrative penalties under Chapter 15 of the Tax Administration Act, No. 28 of 2011, as well as statutory interest charges.

What this means for you, your business, or your clients

  • For yourself: Verify that your individual remuneration data, tax deductions, and personal particulars are correctly reflected on the employer payroll to prevent mismatches on future personal income tax assessments.
  • For your business: Reconcile all EMP201 payments made between 1 March and 31 August 2026 against your payroll records, resolve e@syFile™ validation errors, and confirm final processing status on eFiling before midnight on 31 October 2026 to prevent non-compliance penalties.
  • For your clients: Conduct pre-submission audits of clients’ interim EMP501 files, verify alignment between actual payments and ledger entries for PAYE, SDL, and UIF, and ensure prompt remediation of any rejected submissions.
