To consolidate the laws relating to registered medical schemes; to provide for the establishment of the Council for Medical Schemes as a juristic person; to provide for the appointment of the Registrar of Medical Schemes; to make provision for the registration and control of certain activities of medical schemes; to protect the interests of members of medical schemes; to provide for measures for the co-ordination of medical schemes; and to provide for incidental matters.

The list of Registered Medical Schemes has been updated as Gazetted by the Registrar of Medical Schemes, in General Notice 302 of 2000, Government Gazette 20827 and dated 21 January 2000.
The Regulations in terms of the Medical Schemes Act, 1988, as Gazetted in Government Gazette 20556 of 20 October, 1999, have been added to the Act.
The Regulations come into operation on 1 November, 1999 except for Chapters 3, 4 and 8 and Annexures A and B which come into operation on 1 January, 2000.
You will notice some numbering problems in Annexure B, these are, unfortunately, as they appear in the Gazette.
