Mpumalanga Labour Blitz: BCEA and OHSA Workplace Enforcement

Brought to you by SAnews: The Department of Employment and Labour has initiated a provincial workplace compliance blitz targeting statutory employment terms and occupational safety requirements across Mpumalanga.

In terms of the enforcement powers under the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, No. 75 of 1997 (BCEA) and the Occupational Health and Safety Act, No. 85 of 1993 (OHSA), dedicated inspectorate teams have been deployed from 07 to 11 September 2026 across three district municipalities: Nkangala, Gert Sibande, and Ehlanzeni.

Inspectors are conducting on-site audits across multiple commercial and industrial sectors to verify employer adherence to statutory workplace standards. The scope of inspection includes:

  • BCEA verification: Auditing written contracts of employment, statutory working hours, overtime compensation, wage rates, and leave records.
  • OHSA compliance: Inspecting physical workplace safeguards, hazard identification controls, prescribed health and safety documentation, and statutory risk assessments.

Provincial Chief Inspector Boikie Mampuru confirmed that inspectors will issue formal enforcement notices and take statutory remediation steps against non-compliant entities where breaches of health, safety, or basic employment conditions are detected.
