National Minimum Wage Commission Commences Annual Review

Brought to you by SA Legal Academy: The National Minimum Wage Commission has formally commenced its annual review process to formulate wage adjustment recommendations for Minister of Employment and Labour, Nomakhosazana Meth.

In terms of section 6(1) of the National Minimum Wage Act, No. 9 of 2018, the Commission is statutorily required to review minimum wage rates annually and present recommendations to the Minister. To inform its deliberations, the Commission has gazetted a official notice inviting written representations from stakeholders and the public by 4 September 2026.

Stakeholders submitting written inputs are required to complete a prescribed questionnaire to ensure standardized data collection regarding economic factors and employment impacts. Key procedural aspects of the review process include:

  • Written submissions and completed questionnaires must be lodged by 4 September 2026.
  • The Commission will evaluate public input alongside socio-economic indicators before compiling its statutory report.
  • A second public comment period will be opened once the Commission officially publishes its draft report and proposed adjustment figures.
