Minister Gazettes 2026 Local Government Election Date
Brought to you by SAnews: In terms of section 24(2) of the Local Government: Municipal Structures Act, No. 117 of 1998, the Minister for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) has gazetted 04 November 2026 as the date for national local government elections.
Read in conjunction with section 159 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996, the Minister is mandated to call an election of all municipal councils within 90 days after the expiration of their five-year term. The official proclamation in the Government Gazette on 7 August 2026 formally closes the voters’ roll for the 2026 election cycle.
In accordance with municipal electoral rules, voters are required to cast their ballots strictly within the ward where they are registered. Key regulatory outcomes of the proclamation include:
- Voters’ Roll Closure: All online and physical voter registrations or address updates officially closed at midnight on 7 August 2026.
- Ward-Restricted Voting: Unlike national or provincial elections, section 159 rules do not permit out-of-ward voting on election day.
- Election Timetable Activation: The proclamation officially triggers the Electoral Commission’s statutory election timetable leading to 4 November 2026.

What this means for you, your business, or your clients
- For yourself: Verify that your voter registration details were finalized prior to the 7 August 2026 midnight deadline, as strictly no out-of-ward voting is legally permitted for local council elections.
- For your business: Plan workforce scheduling and operational capacity around Wednesday, 4 November 2026, which will be declared a public holiday under relevant employment legislation to permit voting.
- For your clients: Advise municipal contractors, developers, and corporate clients to factor potential administrative and procurement slowdowns into project schedules during the governance transition period surrounding November 2026.
