Brought to you by SA Accounting Academy: The International Accounting Standards Board (‘IASB’) has published a proposed update to the IFRS Accounting Taxonomy 2025 to support digital financial reporting under newly issued and amended standards.

The draft document, titled IFRS Accounting Taxonomy 2025—Proposed Update 2: IFRS 20 Regulatory Assets and Regulatory Liabilities, Translation to a Hyperinflationary Presentation Currency and Amendments to IFRS 19 Subsidiaries without Public Accountability: Disclosures, updates computer-readable XBRL elements used for digital financial reporting worldwide.

The proposed taxonomy updates cover three key standards and amendments:

  • IFRS 20 Regulatory Assets and Regulatory Liabilities: New tagging structures to support disclosures on regulatory assets, regulatory liabilities, and associated accounting policies.
  • Translation to a Hyperinflationary Presentation Currency: Standardised taxonomy elements for financial statement translations into hyperinflationary currencies.
  • Amendments to IFRS 19: Tagging revisions reflecting reduced disclosure requirements for qualifying subsidiaries without public accountability.

Stakeholders, including financial statement preparers, digital reporting software developers, and auditors, are invited to submit comments on the proposed taxonomy by 14 September 2026.

What this means for you, your business, or your clients

  • For yourself: Technical accountants and reporting specialists must review the proposed XBRL taxonomy tags to prepare for digital financial statement mapping under IFRS 19, IFRS 20, and hyperinflation rules.
  • For your business: Audit firms and reporting software vendors should update their tagging software and audit validation tools to support the 2025 taxonomy structure.
  • For your clients: Reporting entities reporting under IFRS standards will need to ensure their digital financial reporting systems and inline XBRL (iXBRL) filers incorporate the updated taxonomy definitions.
