South Africa to Host 9th SACU Summit and 56th Council of Ministers
Brought to you by SAnews: The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic) has announced that South Africa will host the 9th Southern African Customs Union (SACU) Summit of Heads of State or Government, the 56th SACU Council of Ministers, and the Quarterly Meetings of SACU Institutions from 18 to 26 June 2026 in Cape Town.
The scheduled sessions, which will take place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre 2 (CTICC2), are convened under the administrative framework of the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) Agreement, 2002. These meetings serve as the primary decision-making forums for coordinating trade, customs tariffs, and economic policies across the regional bloc.
The high-level delegations will include representatives from all five SACU member states:
- Botswana
- Eswatini
- Lesotho
- Namibia
- South Africa
The discussions are expected to focus on regional trade facilitation, tariff harmonization, and the ongoing implementation of the SACU Strategic Plan. As the oldest functioning customs union in the world, SACU plays a central role in determining the common external tariffs and excise duties applicable to goods entering the common customs area.
What this means for you, your business, or your clients
- For yourself: No direct individual compliance obligations; monitor the outcomes of the 56th Council of Ministers for potential updates to regional trade policy and professional advisory requirements.
- For your business: Ensure that logistics, supply chain, and compliance teams are aware of potential administrative delays or policy announcements arising from the high-level ministerial sessions between 18 and 26 June 2026.
- For your clients: Advise clients engaged in cross-border trade within the SACU region to review their tariff classifications and customs valuation methodologies in anticipation of potential harmonized tariff adjustments or trade facilitation reforms discussed during the summit.
