I, Prof Bonginkosi Emmanuel Nzimande, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, in terms of Section 50 of the Astronomy Geographic Advantage Act, 2007 (Act No. 21 of 2007) ("the Act"), hereby promulgate this declaration to replace the Declaration published in Government Gazette No. 42942, under Notice No. 806, of 29 May 2019 which prohibited certain mining activities in the Sutherland Central Astronomy Advantage Area (SCAAA).

 

In terms of this Declaration and in accordance with section 23 of the Act, I hereby declare that certain mining activities are prohibited with the SCAAA as detailed below:

 

(a) Open-cast mining and mining dumps at ground level;
(b) Hydraulic fracturing (or fracking);
(c) All Exploration; and
(d) All Prospecting activities.
