National Policy on Assessment and Qualifications for Schools in the General Education and Training Band

Part 6: Qualifications

 

115) In the General Education and Training (GET) band, Grade 9 marks the end of the compulsory phase of schooling. Education in this band aims at providing learners with the basic competences or a broad foundation of knowledge, skills, values and attitudes needed for lifelong learning.

 

116) A qualification at this level must be registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) at level 1 and will be quality assured by the relevant ETQA (Umalusi).

 

117) A Grade 9 qualification will be required for access to Grade 10 at a school, NQF level 2 qualifications at an FET College, other learning pathways in the FET band or to access a different pathway at NQF level 1.

 

118) The Department of Education will design national Record Sheets and progression schedules that should be used to collate information on the performance of learners at the end of the year in order to issue a national report card that conforms that a learner has qualified.

 

119) On meeting the requirements for the qualification, and should a learner exit the system at the end of Grade 9, the learner may be issued with a certificate.
